Who
We Are
Who
Country Kidsafety
Network has been initiated by Farm
Safety Association in partnership with Safe
Kids Canada. The Network is focused on rural child safety and dedicated
to preventing unintentional injuries. Our mission is to “promote
rural safety for children” with a grand vision of “a rural
environment where children can live, play and grow free of injury and
illness”.
Why
As
a network, we realized that there is very little available education
and awareness material aimed at informing adults how to ensure children
partake in safe activities in rural Ontario. Statistics show that a
significant number of fatalities and injuries on Ontario farms are of
children under the age of 16yrs. The Country Kidsafety Network believes
that the vast majority of these tragic injuries are not the result of
accidents or “acts of fate”. They are predictable and preventable.
We believe that the adults responsible for our young people can, with
awareness and education resources, provide a healthy and safe environment
for our children to live and grow while enjoying many of the activities
that make rural lifestyles so appealing.
How
Children can
and should be active so they can play and learn, but they can do this
by keeping safety top of mind. This means wearing helmets when cycling,
obeying traffic signals when crossing roadways and buckling up when
traveling in a vehicle. For young children, it is the adults in their
lives who can ensure they wear the safety gear, as well as evaluate
and identify hazards and risks. Adults play the roles of educator, supervisor
and behavior models as children learn to live with the hazards around
them. The Country Kidsafety Network strives to take this one step further
for rural children, who are exposed to additional injury risks due to
the environments they live in which often involve farm machinery and
large animals.
What
The
newsletter will, on a quarterly timetable, provide awareness introductions
to key topics that will be supported and expanded on the website. As
part of the Network our website, www.countrykidsafety.net,
will be an integral component of disseminating information to all members.
The Network will function through the generous support of corporate
sponsorship and a network of supporting organizations assisting across
Ontario to get our materials distributed.
The Country
Kidsafety Network would like to thank for your interest and see you
as a critical member of the Network. If you would like more information
or find how you can support the Network please contact
us.
